BlackBerry Mercury with QWERTY keypad reportedly coming to Verizon

It appears the rumored BB Mercury smartphone has indeed been confirmed for a release. Several reports now claim that the smartphone will be made available on Verizon in the US when it launches.

The news comes via gadget leakster Roland Quandt, who posted on Twitter that “BlackBerry “Mercury” BBB100 is coming to Verizon in the US.” Apart from this, no other information about the BB Mercury was revealed in his Twitter post.

BlackBerry Mercury: Specs and Features

Earlier rumors about the smartphone suggest it’ll feature a Full HD display and run Android Nougat out-of-the-box. Under the hood, the BlackBerry Mercury is said to get powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor bundled with 3GB of RAM. Other rumored specs include 32GB of built-in storage, a fingerprint sensor, along with a 3400mAh battery. In the camera department, reports also suggest that ‘Mercury’ could feature an 18MP rear camera along with an 8MP front-facing camera.

To recall, BlackBerry recently confirmed that it’ll no longer manufacture its own devices. The Canadian manufacturer is going the Nokia way, by allowing third party OEMs to manufacture and sell handsets under the BlackBerry branding. The company recently inked a deal with China’s TCL to manufacture and sell smartphones carrying the BB brand. TCL has already confirmed its presence next week at CES 2017 in Las Vegas, where we can expect some BlackBerry-related news. That said, the BlackBerry Mercury was already in the works before BlackBerry decided to bow out of its smartphone business.

Also, BlackBerry CEO John Chen earlier confirmed that the company would indeed release one last smartphone manufactured in-house with the iconic QWERTY keyboard. Moreover, the device was also recently spotted on GeekBench which clearly suggests that this might be the final roll of the dice for BlackBerry.

However, neither BlackBerry nor Verizon have confirmed anything about the BlackBerry Mercury, so we advise our readers to take this information with a pinch of salt.

Update: (The latest leak suggests the rumored BlackBerry Mercury is said to pack a 4.5-inch AMOLED display with a 1620 x 1080 pixels resolution, which amounts to pixel density of 420 ppi)
