The iPhone 5, Sony Xperia Z are two of the most popular smartphone of all times. So to pick the better of the two is a very difficult preposition. Often devices are graded on their specs and features but personally I feel that rating smartphones is an exercise in futility since different people have different priorities. Some would like to have a high end camera on their smartphones, while some other would like to have a big screen. Therefore it will be prudent to compare the devices rather than giving marks and rating different devices. So here we have two devices iPhone 5 from Apple (AAPL) and Xperia Z from Sony.
iPhone 5 vs. Xperia Z – Design
The iPhone 5 has an Anodized Aluminum Body and a toughened glass front while the Sony Xperia Z consists of two glass layers on the back and the front. The glass layers give a glossy look to the Xperia Z. The iPhone Aluminum back looks pretty tough and the toughness can be felt when you hold the device in your hand. The Xperia Z is slightly larger than the iPhone 5 at 7 cm as compared to 6cm.
Both the iPhone 5 and the Xperia Z are very slim smartphones. The iPhone 5 is 7.6mm thick while the Xperia Z 7.9mm. However there is one unique feature in the Xperia Z body and it its water resistance. The Xperia Z is equipped with rubber sealed flaps which fits the ports snugly and prevent water from seeping into the device even if it is submerged accidentally.
iPhone 5 vs. Xperia Z – Screen
iPhone 5 boasts a 4-inch IPS screen with a resolution of 1,126 x 640. On the other hand the Xperia Z has a 5-inch LCD screen with a resolution of 1080p. It is pretty obvious that the Xperia Z screen is far ahead of of the iPhone 5 screen. The Xperia Z screen is also 1 inch larger than the iPhone 5 screen. The screen resolution and pixel density of the Xperia Z screen is also higher than the iPhone 5. However the iPhone 5 provides a better image clarity than the Xperia Z. This is probably caused by the Sony Xperia Z’s image engine reduces contrast in order to improve battery life. Similarly the Contrast, Color and Black levels of the iPhone 5 screen is excellent. The large screen of Xperia Z is very good for playing games and watching movies. The screen of the Xperia Z has a plastic screen protector which protects the screen from scratches but lowers the picture quality.
iPhone 5 vs. Xperia Z – Power
While the iPhone 5 features a dual-core Apple A6 CPU with 1GB RAM, the Xperia Z boasts a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro with 2GB RAM. There is not much to compare since the two processors are alike as cheese and chalk. . In the Geekbench benchmark the iPhone 5 gets 1600 points while the Xperia Z scores 2100. So it can be safely said that the Xperia Z has a much beefier processor.
However the difference is not much in evidence in the daily use. If you are a 3D gaming buff you would be enamored by the iPhone since the iOS has a much better collection of games than the Android.
iPhone 5 vs Xperia Z – Camera
The iPhone 5 features an 8-megapixel camera with LED flash while the Xperia Z boasts a 13-megapixel sensor with LED flash. Both the smartphones have excellent cameras and can produce great pictures in bright light conditions. However, in spite of having a camera of higher resolution, the Xperia Z features a problematic camera with dynamic range, exposure judgment and color accuracy inferior to the iPhone 5 camera. The Xperia Z scores over the iPhone 5 camera when it comes to apps since it offers more features than the camera app of iOS 6. The iPhone 5 camera offers only HDR and Panorama features , the Xperia Z camera is equipped with a number of filters and special effects.
iPhone 5 vs Xperia Z – Software
Again a comparison is futile between the iOS 6 and the Android 4.2. They are starkly different OS. While the iOS 6 is incredibly simple, the Android OS is extremely flexible with an option to saw off unwanted features and swap with another third part app. This is not possible with the iOS.
The iPhone 5 was released much earlier than the Xperia Z and therefore the latter features the latest technological advances. It is also water proof but still there are problems with the camera and so also the screen. The iPhone 5S will be released soon and then it will an equal duel.
