Tamron, Japan the optical equipment manufacturer that has come up with full-frame and APS-C format sensors for the digital SLR cameras, has yet again made a move by adding its lenses with VC (vibration compensation) technology to lens profile for aberration correction.

Aberration is a type of distortion in which a lens fails to focus all colors to the same convergence point. It occurs because lenses have a different refractive index for different wavelengths of light. Aberration correction is currently offered by products of Adobe Systems Incorporated, namely Adobe Photoshop CS6, Camera Raw (Photoshop’s raw image plug-in) and the photo management software Photoshop Lightroom 4.

This update of lens profile allows the owners of SP 70-200mm F/2.8 Di VC USD (Model A009) for Nikon mount and the SP 90mm F/2.8 Di MACRO 1:1 VC USD (Model F004) for Nikon mount and the SP 24-70mm F/2.8 Di USD (Model A007) for Sony mount to use the above mentioned software from Adobe Systems Incorporation and make corrections regarding achromatism or aberration in the image.

Basically the software are designed to work on “fringes of colors” along the boundaries separating the dark and lit up parts of an image.

Pros at a Glance

  • It gives the photographer a chance to illuminate the image by making corrections
  • It removes the possible blur from even the black and white pictures where colors is not an issue.
  • Listing in lens profile for aberration control takes these lenses closer to a professional-grade
  • Works with Photoshop’s raw image plug-in Camera Raw, no need to shell out huge bills for new software.
  • The USD, VC and now the aberration correction added up make it a delight.
  • Too heavy for to carry for the level of Macro shoots the lenses give, with the detachable tripod mount attached.
  • Too much work upon the image may lead to color fringes getting defused.
  • They lack a critical sharpness at 200mm focal length, until the aperture is dropped to F/8, although image sharpness does not differ from the competitors in the other ranges.
  • This added profile evidently adds up more cost to the full package as the customers habitual with Photoshop CS5 or Lightroom 3 will have to install an updated version of Adobe DNG converter to use the updated lens profile.

Prices and Availability

The SP 70-200mm F/2.8 Di VC USD (Model A009) for Nikon mount and the SP 90mm F/2.8 Di MACRO 1:1 VC USD (Model F004) for Nikon mount and the SP 24-70mm F/2.8 Di USD (Model A007) for Sony mount are available in the market since Dec. 2012 and reasonably priced starting at $1499

Verdict

All in all it’s a positive lens profile update by Tamron, it not only increases the quality of work that one could produce using the Adobe Suit, but adds on to its credibility and availability at lower price than CANON 70-200mm 2.8, the CANON 70-200mm 2.8 IS and the CANON 70-200mm 2.8 IS II. Tamron has well optimized their telephoto zoom lenses by this addition to the profile of aberration correction provided in Adobe ® Photoshop ® CS6, Photoshop’s raw image plug-in Camera Raw, and the photo management software Photoshop Lightroom ® 4. The update is more on a technical side where user already familiar with the features of  Adobe products gets to use the functionality with better insight and proficiency.
