Microsoft had a nil presence in the hardware arena and they have stepped into a highly competitive segment with their Microsoft Surface RT. It will be locking horns with some of the biggest market leaders who have already gobbled a large segment of the market. The 4th generation of the iPad is out and it will be very interesting to see the ultimate battle between these two worthy competitors.
Let us make a fair comparison of the two products, the 4th generation iPad and the Microsoft RT. Let us start with the design-
Both the iPad 4 and the Surface RT represent the best among the rest and therefore it is very difficult to define which one is better. Both the devices look supreme and use premium materials and constructed solidly to high standards of quality. The iPad 4 looks great with its better rounded edges and the sophisticated look of its Aluminum casing. The Microsoft Surface RT is also not a pushover and also looks different with its tapered edges and a choice to use magnesium composite. The Surface RT looks classier with its 16:9 ratios while the iPad 4 looks more ‘box like’ and square.
There are many things which are akin to one another in both the devices. Both the devices possess proprietary docking ports with the iPad having the lightning port and the Surf ace RT having the magnetic power connector. The Surface RT scores over the iPad 4 slightly with its stereo speakers, full size USHB port and also a kickstand.
The iPad flexes its muscles with its camera features. While the Microsoft Surface RT features a front camera with a resolution of 1 MP, the iPad 4 has a 1.2 MP camera. However it is the rear camera which ups the ante for the iPad. The iPad has a 5-megapixel auto-focus camera, with an F2.4 lens and 1080p video recording. On the other hand the Surface RT features a fixed focus 1-megapixel camera that’s able to record video in up to 800p resolution.
Interface and Controls:
If you like to walk the treaded path, the iPad 4 is the one for you. With a standard and robust design the manufacturers have kept the interface simple and user friendly. The learning curve of the iPad 4 is small.
In sharp contrast the Surface RT is very regal with its chic looks and a spanking new operating system in the form of the Windows RT makes it a dream device which any one will gives his right hand for. The Windows RT looks good with its looks and live tiles. It holds its own against the iOS 6 but it still needs a lot of refinement since it is relatively new and not much is known about how it will operate. The notification system of the Wndows RT needs to be improved to bring it at level with the iOS.
Tasks like e-mails are done in a jiffy by both the devices. Both the tablets are much akin to one another with regards to layouts and functions. The keyboards are also very spacious and sensitive. Surface tablet has an extra feature which is the handwriting recognition option.
Processor and Memory:
Giving a cursory look it seems that the Surface RT packs more bang in its interiors. The Surface RT is [powered by a robust and powerful quad-core 1.3GHz NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor coupled with 2GB of RAM. The iPad 4th generation on the other hand has a dual-core, 1.4GHz, Apple A6X processor and a RAM at 1GB. The processing power of both the devices is almost equal and their prowess is truly revealed when you play 3D games.
If you compare the price and its output, one can see that the Surface RT Tablet offers more bang for money. The base version of both the tablet is priced at $500. The Surface RT boasts 32 GB storage while the iPad 4 has 16 GB storage. The Surface tablet has a microSD card slot as well as USB port to connect flash drives and external drives.
Internet and Connectivity:
The iPad 4 and Surface RT has smooth navigational controls and fast page loads. The iPad 4 is faster in loading pages. It is best suited for general surfing needs. The Microsoft Surface RT has the standard desktop version of Internet Explorer 10, which is very useful with other secondary things which a normal browser is unable to accomplish.
Both the tablets have equally powerful batteries much better than other compatriots. Users have been getting a battery backup for 1.5 days with Wi-Fi only and a bit less with LTE connectivity.
In conclusion I would like to state that both the tablets are the best tablets in their categories. It is for no small reason they are considered the bench mark for excellence in the tablet segment market.
